Manor Farm has been designed to fit the character of the estate’s principal ‘farmhouse’ and it
is a comfortable and handsome house, with rendered walls under clay-tile roofs. Here ADAM
architecture have taken the opportunity to have a less formal work of architecture, but one which
feels entirely natural in this wooded estate with its paddocks and vistas.
Manor Farm is characterised by a more relaxed tone of architecture and composed of three principal
parts. The main range has two lower wings, one designed in the manner of an attached mill and
aligned with main block; this provides the master bedroom suite. A one-and-a-half storey range
stands at right angles to the main range and this houses the family kitchen and family room, both
contained in the ample double-height, timber-framed structure. This was conceived of as an older
barn structure, with its large windows styled as if infills for original cart openings. The main
range includes the drawing room, entrance hall and dining room.
The overall feel is rustic, but the building’s style draws on the essential classical vernacular of late
seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century farmhouse architecture, with shuttered windows. The
main range is in coursed rubble stone, under a clay-tile roof. The barn range is timber-framed with
walls of stone under a clay-tile roof, and has low pitched roof-dormers in the seventeenth-century
rustic manner. It has a covered loggia facing the swimming pool, in the manner of an open cart shed,
and this provides a sheltered area for al fresco dining. The landscape is designed in an informal
picturesque manner, providing a delightful contrast to other, more formal, built elements within the
estate.
